Hypnosis and Weight Loss

Weight Loss Program - Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscles

The problem with talking about hypnosis and weight loss, or hypnosis and many other things for that matter is that there often are few, if any, studies on whose results you can hang your hat. In this world where it seems everything is studied from every different angle, it seems that the final conclusion is that hypnosis can help you lose weight...or not.

There are plenty of claims of success by the myriad of hypnotherapists of all kinds who have put up websites and gone into the "Hypnosis can cure..." business.

Actually, the problem is not even whether or not hypnosis can or cannot be a tool in a healthy weight loss program. That much, at least, is pretty well agreed upon. The question seems to be how to use it and how much effect it actually has on an individual's weight loss.

That brings us to another factor. We are dealing with individuals, and individuals tend to react differently to the efforts of hypnotherapists in ANY attempt to produce a viable effect.

Most claims found for hypnotherapists on the internet, whether they are claiming that hypnosis is effective for weight loss or not (and most are) is that they ARE successful. Like many other things that can be effective and valuable in weight loss, or almost any other endeavor, the unknown fact is what does "effective" mean to these people and can they define "effective" in terms of so many successful outcomes in so many total attempts. This is the problem. There are no numbers, at least none that I could find.

However, many studies DO exist that show that hypnosis CAN be combined with other standard weight loss efforts to produce a better outcome. For example, it has long been known that changing eating habits and attitudes towards food can help with weight loss. It has been found that hypnosis, combined with behavior modification, tends to meet with greater success than behavior modification or attitude alteration alone. It seems that the hypnosis does what it often does best...it relaxes the subject, allows them to focus and concentrate, and helps them learn their lessons, if you will, more quickly and efficiently.

Bottom line? Hypnosis alone is not very likely to produce profound effects on weight loss. This is particularly true in light of many hypnotherapists' claims that "only one session" will cause a massive, immediate, and continuous weight loss. If anything, for most people, hypnosis is simply one more weapon in an arsenal of weapons in the war against obesity. As always the main weapons will be regular physical activity and sensible eating habits.

Some Thoughts On Hypnosis And Weight Loss

For as long as I care to remember, I have been concerned about my weight in particular, and my overall health in general. My partner pokes fun at me occasionally about this, especially if I am trying to get back on track with a seriously healthy eating regime.

This is usually the case after some period of over indulgence, like right now, a few short weeks after Christmas and New Year. He says he loves me the way I am, and tells me not to be so obsessive about reading food labels, eating low fat foods, and so on, and so on. If I am like that, some of it is his fault. Would you believe that he actually bought me four, yes four, boxes of chocolates over Christmas. He knows that I am a total chocoholic,(as are many women),and simply cannot resist them. He gets a perverse pleasure from watching me agonise over the temptation, and usually not succeeding.

He has given up cigars totally for the last three months, and says that this is his way of getting his own back. He teases me by saying that he has more willpower than I have! In normal times I simply refuse to have anything made with chocolate in the house, as I know that I will give in to temptation otherwise, and sometimes he takes advantage of my weakness!

This may all be mildly amusing, but controlling your weight and avoiding weight gain as you get older, are vitally important ways to help prevent a host of weight-related health problems. Indeed, if you are more than 20 pounds over your ideal weight, you are at far greater risk for a considerable number of potentially deadly conditions.

These can include diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, endometrial cancer, obstructive sleep apnea, and breast cancer. In addition, and equally worrying,is the fact that most people who are overweight tend to avoid exercise, and that that same avoidance, in turn simply adds to the toll paid for those extra pounds. If you have a sedentary lifestyle and are overweight, you are at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and other health problems. Moreover, if you already have a medical condition such as high cholesterol, being overweight puts you at a higher risk for complications.

The good news is, that even modest amounts of weight loss can improve your health significantly. The loss of 10% of your body weight can help to reduce blood pressure, high cholesterol, triglyceride, and high blood sugar levels. Nowadays, there are many procedures that can contribute to helping people lose weight effectively.

One of the better known and better promoted procedures in helping weight loss, is through the means of hypnosis!

However, many misconceptions have arisen with regard to the application of hypnosis as a means of losing weight. As it does not involve drugs, or any kinds of medications or surgery, many people tend to think that losing weight through hypnosis seems to be one of the safest weight loss programs. In order to understand more about hypnosis and its effects on losing weight, here is a list of some facts that will give you an insight into what it can do to your body weight.

1 - Hypnosis can be an imminently risky affair if not done properly, and not applied by people who are highly trained in the real art of hypnosis. Even if many people tend to think that hypnosis will not pose an imminent danger to their health, it is still important to know that the person who will do the procedure is skilled enough, and that he or she knows what factors to consider before carrying out the procedures.

2 - Hypnosis by itself cannot eliminate excess fat from the body, and therefore make somebody lose weight as a result of that alone. The majority of health experts contend that hypnosis should only be a part of a whole assimilated process, and should never be used as the sole weight loss procedure. Moreover, one session of hypnosis will only have very minimal results on an individual's weight. When losing weight, hypnosis matched with psychotherapy will be more effective than hypnosis alone. This is because hypnosis is only a means of deeply relaxing the mind, and in which one can still be in control of his or her own body.

3 - Hypnosis is one way of getting into the subliminal state of the individual. When an individual is in the "hypnotic stage," the body is more responsive to suggestions because of its intensified state of concentration. However, this does not necessarily mean that through hypnosis, one can effectively "reprogram" the mind of an individual. In reality hypnosis ranges from a trouble-free relaxation condition, to a proper initiation, all of which is carried out by a professional hypnotist. It should not therefore be seen as a magical solution to remedy every ailment, including weight loss!

To narrow it down, people should be more aware that hypnosis is not in itself a sole effective process in losing weight, but is more the facilitator of various treatment techniques. Therefore, it should be combined with other weight loss management programs in order to be effective in helping people lose excess weight. If it is seen as a potential help rather than the total solution, people will be able to lose more weight and have a more relaxed and refreshed state of mind in accomplishing their goals.

Discover Weight Loss Through Hypnosis

For many people hypnosis conjures up the image of a man of stage making someone do something completely foolish but weight loss through hypnosis seems even sillier.

But there is solid evidence that a person can achieve quick and lasting weight loss results by using hypnosis.

But firstly let’s look at what hypnosis is?

According to Contemporary Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing hypnosis or as it is more commonly known hypnotherapy is “the therapeutic use of suggestion when a person is in an altered state of consciousness in order to effect positive changes in that person’s behavior and so treat a range of health conditions”. It has not only been used to decrease the pain a person is feeling but also for weight control.

In a publication (Warren 2003) there was a statement that “Hypnosis is a way to access the untapped power of the mind and alter brain functions. In this state of intense relaxation and concentration the mind is able to focus on positive suggestions which can be carried out at a future time. These subliminal messages are surprisingly powerful.”

Then at the 54th Annual Conference in November 2003 of the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, Dr David Spiegel (Stanford University researcher) said “that although we don’t fully understand how it works, there is significant evidence that hypnosis can be effective in helping people reach into their own unconscious resources to solve problems normally beyond their ability”.

This in fact shows that the scientific community believes that indeed it is possible for someone to achieve weight loss through hypnosis.

In the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology 1996 a report regarding meta-analysis (comparing multiple studies) showed that adding hypnosis increased weight loss by an average of 97% when people were being treated. But even more important this increased the effectiveness of post treatment by over 146%. So this has shown that hypnosis can work even better if used over longer periods of time.

Whilst in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology 1986 a study was carried out on 60 women and they were separated into hypnosis versus non-hypnosis groups. It was found that those women using hypnosis lost an average of 17lbs whilst those in the non-hypnosis group only lost an average 5lbs.

So as you can see weight loss through hypnosis is very effective and may be more people should look at trying it in the future.

Does Weight Loss By Hypnosis Really Work?

How does some one lose weight using hypnosis?

You are looking at an alternative way of losing weight. So have you considered weight loss by hypnosis? It may seem a bit voodoo-ish but think again. What you need to do is think of hypnosis as a new way to communicate with yourself and change the way you see yourself.

It is important to remember that our feelings determine our actions and some of those actions can be irrational and self destructive. Over eating is definitely an irrational and self destructive action. So it is important that you think before you eat.

Why not ask yourself some questions such as:

1. Am I really hungry?
2. Do I want that food and why do I want it?
3. Will it help me in the long run?
4. Why is it that I suddenly have a food craving popping into my head?

Then you need to think about how you feel after you have overeaten.

1. Do you feel bloated.
2. Do your clothes suddenly feel tight.
3. Do you suddenly find yourself suffering with stomach cramps.
4. Do you find yourself having to use an upset stomach medication more often than before.

Now think how you really feel about each one of these conditions and experiences and how uncomfortable you feel. Please realize that "thinking" is important when you are looking to lose weight.

Start talking to yourself positively about what a great decision you have made in passing on food that was not necessary. If you are in the habit of saying negative things to yourself then stop immediately. Our subconscious mind processes these hurtful negative words and then you physically feel the pain of the insult. You probably would not call someone else a loser, so why call yourself that?

When it comes down to it, this is how to go about weight loss by hypnosis. By changing and training your thoughts that go in to your mind using various mind optimization tools, you will learn to think, and talk to yourself in a way that reinforces the positive habits that you are trying to learn. In fact hypnosis can be one of the least expensive ways of losing weight, as no longer will you need to buy expensive packaged food, weight loss gadgets, and fad diets. Remember your mind controls your body, so train your mind as quickly as you can.
